How Eight Days Changed my Life

BBC and British Media Faculty Led Study Abroad Spring Break 2016

I came across this study abroad opportunity while wondering through the Study Abroad Fair at ODU in Fall 2015. I was looking for the Harry Potter Experience study abroad and found out that it was already booked. So, I was looking for another short trip to go to the UK and came across Dr. Campbell and his BBC and British Media trip that he just created. After talking to him for awhile I decided I wanted to go to his trip and called my mom begging to help me to pay for the trip. She was hesitant at first but said I could go!

Spring semester comes around and Dr. Campbell asked us to meet once a week for two hours to discuss what to expect on the trip and background knowledge of the country and of course the BBC and British Media. I stepped into the 13 person class knowing no one but one kid that lived down the hallway from me my Freshman year. The in class portion was very interesting and different from all of my other classes but I was ready to go to London and leave the country for the first time in my life.

So the big day came and I was so excited and nervous. I was excited because I was going to see the world but nervous because I still had not made a friend to hang out with on the trip. We flew from Norfolk to Atlanta to catch our international flight to Heathrow. By the time we got to Atlanta I had made a few friends. The flight was the worse thing I have ever experienced because I had a full on anxiety attack. I was so thankful to get off that plane once we landed. And my eight adventure began.

I just have to say that doing that trip was the best decision of my life. It gave me perspective of the world around me and the things I stress about are not that important compared to the world out there. I know for a fact that I will be going back to London one day and would even love to work and live there.

J.K. Rowling Paper

As part of the in class portion, Dr. Campbell asked the class to research important figures, historical events, inventions, TV shows, etc as an assignment so we could learn more about British culture besides what he was covering. I focused my paper on J.K. Rowling and the Wizarding World because that is what began my obsession with London and British culture.
